‘Living Undeterred Tour’ takes mental health mission across Carolinas, country

Jeff Johnston of Iowa says he was inspired by Greenville man, Steve Grant

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – By the time Jeff Johnston rolled the “Living Undeterred Tour” bus into Greenville, he had already traveled thousands of miles across the country to raise awareness and money for mental health. The tour started in Johnston’s home state of Iowa after his personal journey of grief and despair.

In October 2016, Johnston’s 23-year-old son, Seth, died from an accidental heroin overdose after a struggle with drugs.

“I went straight downhill. I drank every day. I Invited every negative friend I had in my head for the biggest pity party in the world,” Johnston told FOX Carolina. “After 14 months, I decided I wanted to quit drinking. My life changed the moment I did that.”

Johnston’s wife took a different path. Prudence Johnston, 46, died in June 2021.

The Courage to Change Podcast #59

On a December day in 2010, Steve Grant lost his 24-year-old son, Kelly, to an overdose. Five years earlier, he lost his 21-year-old son, Christopher, in the same way. His only two boys: gone. After a downward spiral of losing his marriage, his only two children and dealing with the repercussions of such, Steve decided to take matters into his own hands and established the Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation to fight back. The Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support to programs that treat teens and young adults who struggle with substance abuse and addiction. The Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation operates under the auspices of the Community Foundation of Greenville, but is committed to assisting worthwhile organizations nationwide. Steve’s story has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Clemson University’s TigerIllustrated.com “Letters from Dabo” section – Part 10.  In addition to being the Managing Director of Mass Mutual in South Carolina, he is also a recent author with his book “Don’t Forget Me – a Lifeline of hope for those touched by substance abuse and addiction”.

How This Father Found Hope After Losing Both Sons to Addiction
Stephen Grant turned his grief into action and has dedicated himself to helping people fight substance abuse.
by  – Posted on Jun 4, 2020

Stephen Grant was at a work retreat, when the leaders asked everyone to share what they hoped their legacy would be at the end of their life. It was then that he said the words that would change his life.

Grant had been struggling up to that point. His younger son, Kelly, had died two weeks earlier and nothing seemed like it mattered. But the question got him thinking about his legacy, and when it was his turn to share, Grant didn’t hesitate.

“I said, ‘I want my legacy to be that I, that I did everything I could to help adolescents and young adults who struggle with addiction, substance abuse and mental health or mental illness,'” Grant told Guideposts.org.

He was just as surprised as everyone else at what he had said, but he believed that God had put the idea in his heart.

When his colleagues asked him why that was the legacy he chose, Grant answered truthfully and explained how substance abuse had led to his divorce and the death of his two sons.

Grant’s journey to that moment had started years earlier, when his boys were teenagers.

From the outside, Grant looked like he had a normal family. His two sons were active in sports and band at school, and he was a devoted father.

Things changed one day when someone came to clean the carpets and found beer bottles hidden under the sofa. Grant suspected one of his sons was drinking and took his oldest, Chris, to a psychiatrist. It was there he learned the truth.

“The [doctor said], “Your son is being controlled by alcohol and drugs right now,” Grant said. “That was when he was about 15 years old.”  Read More at Guideposts.org
